Mexican Music!!

Like any other country, the music of Mexico varies from region to region. The type of music that we are most familiar with is mariachi music. It is the one that most people start singing when they think of Mexico.

Like I just said, the music varies depending on which region you are in. Another really popular type of Mexican music is called Banda. Banda is a type of Mexican music that relies heavily on brass instruments. Here is an example…

Corrido’s are, essentially, a Mexican ballad. They are used to tell a story. They originated in 18th century Spain, but have made their way over to Mexico

The Banana Massacre

The banana massacre started on December 6th, 1928. The targets of this massacre were union workers of the United Fruit Company. This massacre took place in a small town just outside of Santa Marta, Columbia. The people on strike were asking for 8-hour workdays, 6-day workweeks, and the elimination of food coupons. The exact number of casualties is unsure; however, it has been estimated between 47 and 2000.

Politics and the English Language

The essay Politics and the English Language by George Orwell is essentially a commentary in itself; this makes writing a commentary on it rather difficult. This essay focuses on Orwell’s displeasure in how writers are writing. In this commentary, Orwell’s use of diction, and his ability to clearly express his point of view will be analyzed.

Like any poem, or short story, this essay’ phrases were chosen specifically to serve a purpose. Orwell is trying to show how he is not fond of how the current writers were writing their works. He does this heavily through word choice (aka diction), particularly through adjectives. With words such as foolish, ugliness, sheer incompetence, slovenliness, and perversions, Orwell is able to add depth and feeling to his otherwise bland point. By bland, what is meant is that this is an overly clichéd argument. There has always and will always be issues with writing. Orwell is able to effectively display these issues through his use of sentence variety. It is clear that Orwell has a very strong opinion on this topic, and that opinion comes across clearly.

Orwell is able to make his point without being overly repetitive. Using a variety of sentence structures, a wide range of vocabulary, and a true interest in what he is writing about, Orwell is able to achieve this task. One technique that he uses is finding a wide range of sources that make the same error, and comparing them. This allows Orwell to elaborate on his train-of-thought, and it adds depth to his argument. Orwell uses this technique throughout the entire essay. Another technique that Orwell uses is description. He does not use description in a normal way: he uses description by making you imagine how awful this particular piece of literature is. By using words with such heavy denotations, Orwell is able to make the reader see how truly awful each and every piece of literature is.

This particular essay by George Orwell is an interesting read. Orwell is able to effectively convey his point of view, and do so without coming across as overly rude or repetitive.

Shooting an elephant

Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell is an essay written in (date). The purpose of this essay is arguably to prove the point that peer pressure can cause people to do things that they do not believe are necessarily right. This message comes across throughout the entire story, but it is most evident after the narrator decides not to shoot the elephant, but then sees all of the people who expect him to shoot the elephant. While this point does seem logical, another equally valid interpretation of this story is that the local Burmese people were not appreciating the Imperialist system.

This story starts off by first showing the reader that this British police officer has little to no respect from the locals. What the locals do not know is that this officer is also against Imperialism, and does not support British rule. I think that this is an interesting point to bring up because it is the common misconception that all people within the British system support the British system (at least that is what I assume). This point was an interesting point to make because it adds some contrast into the essay. The story then progresses to mention an elephant that has gone wild, and killed not only a cow, but also another person. The police officer is then asked to go deal with the situation. He goes and decides to observe the elephant, because it now seems docile. This is a tamed elephant, and it is used in fields, so if it were calm it would be easy to control. After observing the elephant for a while he deems the elephant calm, and turns to walk away. After turning he sees a bunch of people who have come to see him shoot the elephant. They expect him to shoot the elephant, so he gets the gun that he got from his friend (this gun is used specifically for killing elephants), which has five bullets in it. He shoots the elephant in the head, but it does not die, he then shoots it in a variety of other places but he is unable to kill the elephant. The locals then proceed to kill the elephant. This part of the essay is interesting because it shows exactly what Orwell was trying to communicate. It shows how a man was willing to go against his own morals just in order to please a crowd. In the essay a moral conflict comes about after the elephant is killed. Should he have really killed the elephant? According to the law he was in the right because the elephant had killed a person; however, morally he was in the wrong because the elephant was under control. After all, elephant are wild creatures.

This story brings up some interesting points and most importantly it brings up an ethical issue. It is interesting to try and think what I would have done in that situation. This story is good for trying to see where you stand on a moral issue.
